4x4 Trails
At Syncro Safari, Death Valley ’05 our group tackled three 4x4 routes during our week of activities. These ranged from “Easy” and passable in 2WD to Moderate. Encountering a stretch of “Moderate Plus” late Friday while approaching Mengel Pass encouraged us to turn back.

Trails are rated on a very simple basis here but truthfully there’s much more behind describing trail difficulty than this simplification cando justice. But, for the sake of providing simple ratings, these are compared to a "typical" Syncro’s capability. What’s a typical Syncro? Original 2.1L engine, 14” wheels with 27” LT all-terrain tires, and a rear differential lock.
Ratings are:
Easy – 2WD with decent tires and maybe a little ground clearance can do this trail.
Mild – Occasional 4WD needed, obstacles are not a real challenge for a Syncro, Diff-lock not needed.
Moderate – 4WD often needed, challenging for a typical Syncro, Diff-lock needed at times, some obstacles require getting out, scouting a route, stacking some rocks.
Difficult – 4WD often needed, some obstacles more than a typical Syncro can handle, Diff-lock often required, significant terrain modification to make passable for a Syncro, damage likely
Extreme – Fuh-getaboudit! Serious off-road vehicles needed, not passible by a Syncro
At the Death Valley '05 adventure the trail schedule was:
Monday, November 21, 2005: Lippencott Grade / Racetrack Valley – Mild to Moderate 4-Wheeling
Wednesday, Novelmer 23, 2005: Chloride / Titus Canyon – Easy to Mild 4-Wheeling
Friday, November 25, 2005: Warm Springs / Mengel Pass (almost) – Mild to Moderate 4-Wheeling
