Camp Syncro 2000
Obsidian Flat Group Camp
As of September 2000...
Obsidian Flat Group Campground, located north of Mammoth Lakes, California, provides an opportunity to enjoy a secluded getaway in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. With a peaceful forested setting and mountain views, the campground's location is perfect for relaxing and spending time in nature. Elevation 7800 feet.
It's about 1 mile from any other campsite, on a spur road that goes only to this site. This means it's nice and secluded with little or no traffic and no noise from other campers. It's actually behind two gates that keep it pretty private. It has about 1/2 acre of flat ground and good of space for our contingent of campers.
There is a large fire ring with big logs pulled into a circle around it - great for evening campfires.
The site had piped water with one spigot, fairly centrally located.
There were about 4 picnic tables, plus one taller work table without benches.
Any group above about 25 will need to bring some sort of tables and chairs for comfortable seating.
There are 2 fairly new, permanently constructed pit toilets. There are numerous large pine trees in and around the site, providing nice shady spots. The NFS says this site can accommodate up to 50 people and vehicles up to 40'.
On older maps this might be called "Deadman Group". This site is near Deadman Creek, west of US-395 about halfway between Mammoth Lakes and June Lake. Here are directions for both those coming from north and south of the Mammoth Lakes area.
