Overview
Sunday June 20 to Saturday June 26, 1999 In 1999 Syncro Safari took place in the scenic mountains of Monatana and Wyoming near Yellowstone National Park. The event included Syncronauts from as far away as Germany, socializing, 4-wheeling, and some campfire sing-a-longs. I (Jim Davis) for one, really enjoyed this special adventure and especially how our little band of Syncronauts came together as sort of a family during the week. |
Quick Facts:
Where: Mostly in the Pryor Mountains region northeast of Yellowstone near Bridger, east of Red Lodge
Who: 16 People & 6 Syncros
What: A week of 4-wheeiling, camping & recreation with Syncronauts
Why: We’ve got Syncros, and Wyoming & Montana have great scenery and wildlife, including wild horses, elk, bighorn sheep, and moose!
W-schedule:
- Sunday, June 20th – Arrive at Horseshoe Bend, make camp, make friends
- Monday, June 21st – Friday, June 25th – Travel, 4x4, and camp making our way to Yellowstone National Park
- Saturday, June 26th – Say farewell and head home
Why the Yellowstone area?
We examined several venues for the 1999 Syncro Safari, and Yellowstone was chosen because a large number of Syncronauts preferred it, the scenery was a significant change from Moab, Utah (the 1998 Syncro Safari location), and we had a a pair of Syncronauts (Tom & JeanAnn Kirk) in the area to help organize the program. Also, there are terrific nearby attributes, like Yellowstone National Park (the event's namesake), Grand Teton National Park, and the reasonably close Glacier National Park.
You went 4-Wheeling in Yellowstone National Park?
In a word, no. The event was held in Montana and Wyoming near Yellowstone, but not inside Yellowstone. Yellowstone is the nearest spot with widespread name recognition. People reading the name can know immediately what part of the country the event is in. Also, it's much easier to say "Yellowstone" than "Montana and Wyoming, near Yellowstone". Some of us did take a route home through Yellowstone and did see some beautiful sights and wildlife there!

What sort of 4-Wheeling did you do?
We spent three days on mild-moderate off-road trails exploring, seeing beautiful scenery & wildlife, with two of these days in the Pryor National Wild Horse Reservation in Montana. We didn't do any hard-core crush-your-Syncro stunts. Days not off-road were spent seeing many of the areas pavement accessible sites like the Cody Buffalo Bill Museums, skiing along the Beartooth Hughway, and visiting parts of Yellowstone National Park. We were very careful to leave these beautiful areas just as we found them. What we brought in, we brought out! We don't rip up the terrain with our Syncros.
Schedule:
Sunday, June 20th – Arrive at Horseshoe Bend, make camp, make friends. Camp at Horsehoe Bend.
